Norio Maeda was a legendary pianist, composer, and a towering figure in the world of Japanese jazz and pop arrangement. Emerging as a top-tier modern jazz pianist in Tokyo during the late 1950s, Maeda soon revolutionized the industry with his staggering compositional architecture. He was legendary for his ability to arrange separate scores with each hand at the exact same time.
His 1968 masterpiece Alpha Ray remains a seminal milestone in the "Wajazz" canon, highly sought after by global collectors for its innovative avant-garde recording techniques and sharp trio instincts. Beyond jazz, Maeda was a mastermind of Japanese television music and sophisticated city pop arrangement, winning the Japan Record Award for Best Arrangement in 1978.
