Artist Profile
Norio Maeda (1934–2018)
Norio Maeda was a legendary pianist, composer, and a towering figure in the world of Japanese jazz and pop arrangement. Emerging as a top-tier modern jazz pianist in Tokyo during the late 1950s, Maeda soon revolutionized the industry with his staggering compositional architecture. He was legendary for his ability to arrange separate scores with each hand at the exact same time.
His 1968 masterpiece Alpha Ray remains a seminal milestone in the "Wajazz" canon, highly sought after by global collectors for its innovative avant-garde recording techniques and sharp trio instincts. Beyond jazz, Maeda was a mastermind of Japanese television music and sophisticated city pop arrangement, winning the Japan Record Award for Best Arrangement in 1978. Voted the top arranger by Swing Journal for 22 consecutive years and a recipient of the Nanri Fumio Award, Maeda’s highly theoretical yet deeply intuitive works stand at the absolute apex of Japanese musical history.

Information
A torrent of brilliance unleashed from the fingertips—the piano trio artistry of an arranging giant.
Famed for his ability to 'write two different scores simultaneously with his right and left hands,' the genius arranger Norio Maeda welcomed his close allies Takeshi Inomata and Tatsuro Takimoto in 1968 to deliver his debut piano trio album, confronting the format head-on as a pianist.
This album seamlessly blends the refined, post-bop melodies that led the jazz scene of the era with radical avant-garde experimentation, featuring prepared piano and the audacious ingenuity of stuffing seven microphones inside the piano's body. A seminal masterpiece etched into Japanese jazz history, where Maeda’s masterful compositional architecture and his sharp performative instincts are intricately interwoven.
