1991年9月21日シングル「Heaven」でEpic Record よりデビュー。オリジナリティ溢れる楽曲と独特な存在感により人気を得て、ファッションでも注目を集め 1992年の2nd アルバム「SOUL KISS」では、日本レコード大賞ポップ、ロック部 門のアルバム・ニューアーティスト賞を受賞。1996 年 女優として出演した岩 井俊二監督の映画「スワロウテイル」が公開され、劇中のバンドYEN TOWN BANDのボーカルとして参加。主題歌「Swallowtail Butterfly ~あいのうた」オリコ ン1位の大ヒットとなる。1997年のアルバム「Junior Sweet」もオリコン1位のミリオンセラーを記録。収録の「やさしい気持ち」もシングル大ヒットとなる。 この頃からファッション、ライフスタイルを含めた新しい女性像 としての人気を獲得し「Charaのような」と女性アーティストを形容するような個性を確立した。 近年では、それぞれ活躍する「HIMI」こと佐藤 緋美(俳優・アーティスト)と「SUMIRE」(モデル・女優)の2人の母として、アーティストとして両立させて きたCharaのライフスタイルにも共感するファンの支持も厚く、新しい存在感を見せている。 音楽活動においては、デビューより、一貫した拘りの音楽的探求を続け、各時代を担う気鋭のアーティスト、クリエーターとのコラボレーション作品や活動が数 多いことでも知られる。 2019年 常田大希率いる THE MILLENNIUM PARADEの「Stay!!!」ではボーカルを担当。2018年12月 オリジナルアルバム『Baby Bump』をリリース。2020年2月には YUKIとのユニット「Chara +YUKI」(チャラユキ)名義でミニアルバム『echo』リリースしている。2021年9月はデビュー 30周年記念ライブとして ”Chara‘s Time Machine : 30th Anniversary Live“ をNHK大阪ホール、東京 LINE CUBE SHIBUYAで開催。大盛況のライブで30周年イ ヤーをスタート、Charaはステージ上で、レーベルの移籍を発表した。そのほか、Chara30th記念書籍刊行や、女優としてドラマ出演など活動も盛んな年となった。 音楽的探求心による表現はクラシックにも及び、マエストロ栁澤寿男率いるオーケストラとともに、初の本格的シンフォニックコンサート「Chara 30th ANNIVERSARY Premium Symphonic Concert~Chara’s Time Machine~」を東京 オーチャードホール、兵庫 県立芸術文化センターKOBELCO大ホールで開催し た。時代を超えて聞き継がれる名曲の数々を壮大なアレンジとともに披露。2022年11月日本コロムビア移籍第一弾シングル「A・O・U」をリリースする。

Chara made her debut as a singer-songwriter in Japan on September 21st, 1991 with the single Heaven on Epic Records. Her original songs and unique presence rapidly gained attention and popularity. Her fashion style kept her always as the center of attention. In 1992, her second album Soul Kiss won the New Artist award for pop and rock music at the Japan Music Awards.
In the 1996 film Swallowtail Butterfly, directed by Shuji Iwai, Chara appeared as an actress, performing the role of lead singer of the fictional Yen Town Band. She was also featured on the soundtrack album, with the theme song Swallowtail Butterfly ~ Ai no Uta becoming a #1 single. She repeated the feat the following year, with her single Yasashii Kimochi off of her million-selling #1 album Junior Sweet.
As a leading figure of Japanese popular culture, and with a growing audience of admirers of her art, lifestyle and fashion, Chara became a new archetype for women. “Like Chara” became a way to describe that style for female musicians. Chara managed to balance her career as a musician and songwriter with being a mother of two talented children, Sumire (a model and actress) and Himi (a musician and actor), who are now actively performing.
Since her debut, Chara has consistently pushed original musical ideas, collaborating with top creators in every field, and elevating up-and-coming musicians. After releasing her own original album Baby Bump in 2018, she joined The Millenium Parade on the single Stay!!! as a vocalist in 2019, and then in 2020 she released the mini-album Echo with the artist Yuki. She will also soon appear as an actress in a drama for Disney+.
Chara’s 30th anniversary in the music business was celebrated in 2021 with Chara’s Time Machine, a live show at NHK Osaka Hall and Line Cube Shibuya in Tokyo. A book commemorating the anniversary was released. Pushing her musical exploration into the classical world, Chara took on a full scale symphonic concert, led by maestro Hisao Yanagisawa at Tokyo Orchid Hall and KOBELCO Grand Hall in Hyogo. Her original songs were performed with spectacular arrangements.
Heading in new directions in 2022, Chara will release her first single for Nippon Colombia in November, with the title A・O・U.

SZA」、 Kendrick Lamar「To Pimp a Butterfly」等を手掛けたエンジニアMike Bozziが担当。

The title of Chara’s new song is A・O・U.
“This song is about a singer-songwriter who focuses on playing good music. She's funny, but beautiful just the way she is, and she's happy in her noble isolation. It's a song about such a girl.” Chara said.
A・O・U was produced by Mabanua. It’s a cute and groovy track. Omokage is co-written by Kenichi Takemoto, whose wonderful voice supports Chara’s live performances, and was performed by Ohashi Trio, who also served as producer. Mastering was done by Mike Bozzi, who engineered Doja Cat’s Hot Pink and Kiss Me More (featuring SZA), and Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly.
