東京藝術大学美術学部彫刻科という異色のバックグラウンドを持ちながら、卒業と同年の1985年に東芝EMIよりメジャーデビュー。デビュー以降、その圧倒的な歌唱力と洗練されたルックスで、人気テレビアニメ『きまぐれオレンジ⭐︎ロード』の挿入歌を始め数々のドラマ主題歌やCMソングを世に送り出す。国内のみならず、世界中のアニメファン・音楽ファンから熱狂的な支持を集める。5年間の濃密な音楽活動を経て、惜しまれつつも一度表舞台から引退。
2024年、35年ぶりとなる奇跡の復活ライブを開催。往年のファンのみならず、現代のシティポップブームのリスナーの間でも大きな話題を呼ぶ。2025年には自身初の海外公演となる中国公演を開催、即日ソールドアウトを記録。2026年4月には台湾・台北でのソロライブを開催。予想を遥かに超える超満員の観客が殺到したため、急遽スタンディングライブへと変更される伝説的なステージとなった。

Making her major-label debut on Toshiba EMI in 1985, she quickly established herself as one of Japan’s most distinctive vocalists. During her five-year recording career, she performed numerous theme songs for television dramas, commercial campaigns, and the beloved anime Kimagure Orange Road, earning a devoted following that continues to span generations and reach audiences around the world.
After stepping away from the public eye at the height of her career, she made a long-awaited return to the stage in 2024 with her first live performance in 35 years. The comeback resonated not only with longtime fans but also with a new generation discovering her music through the global city pop revival.
Her international profile has continued to grow ever since. Her first overseas concert, held in China in 2025, sold out immediately, followed by a sold-out solo performance in Taipei in 2026 that drew an overwhelming audience and further cemented her enduring popularity across Asia.

Originally released in 1987, Esquisse, the first best-selection album by Kanako Wada, returns on vinyl in a long-awaited reissue.
The album collects nine essential recordings from the early stage of Wada's career, including her debut single "Passing Through," the fan-favorite "Natsu no Mirage," best known as the ending theme from the classic anime Kimagure Orange Road, and "Creation My Heart."
Featuring songs written and composed by an all-star team including Reiko Yukawa, Neko Oikawa, Kazuhiko Kato, Akira Inoue, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Yasushi Akimoto, Esquisse captures the sophisticated sound of late-'80s Japanese pop at its finest.
